Episode 6: Jan Lundberg
Jan Lundberg is a former oil industry analyst for Lundberg Survey and is currently an environmental activist and advocate of depaving. He is the founder of Culture Change and the Sail Transport Network and the author of Songs of Petroleum. He also plays music with The Depavers.
I spoke to him about peak oil, the tension between individualism and community, the innate value of nature, and places where compromise isn’t sufficient. Jan offers a strong counterpoint to Max More and a different approach to environmentalism than Peter Warren.
Aengus, you asked Jan if his position amounted to environmental fundamentalism. I would argue that there is nothing more fundamental than the Earth. What does fundamental mean?
–serving as an original or generating source
–serving as a basis supporting existence or determining essential structure or function.
Ultimately the limits of biological systems trump any entitled feelings of individual choice… if the kid runs out into the freeway, he’s gonna get hit by a truck.
p.s. have you checked the expiration date on a can of food recently? think seeds….
